Although most of the feedback on the set has been good, our director and myself both agree that the stairs needed work. A single, straight, long run of broad stairs makes for a great picture and creates wonderful drama, but we juts don't have the room. Period. We also can see that the first height chosen for the second level/balcony is too high. It's built in scale for 12 feet, but we don't need that, nor can we afford the additional space required for the stairs. The higher they go, the longer they run, the more stage they eat up. It all comes down to the stairs at this point. So imaging the height coming down two feet from what you see here. I haven't cut down the model and may not at all. Time is of the essence. When Bernard looked at the model he called and described a change he had in mind. If we couldn't afford a single, straight run, then give us a different kind of drama by introducing some landings and levels to perform from. Each landing can represent a change in direction as well, and of course that means conserving stage space. It sounded great, but the phone is not the place to describe detailed design work, so this is not necessarily what he had in mind. It's my own blind attempt to explore the idea of a staircase that changes direction...
And a better shot. That's Antonio up top, The Cardinal on the first landing and Bosola on the lower landing. |
