NERO is the elemental shadow of BOSOLA

Description of the ELEMENTAL concept:
In the end it was the exploration of colour as foundation for costume concepts that gave birth to our unusual interpretation of the supporting cast, now known as THE ELEMENTALS. Each Elemental will be assigned to one of the principal characters. It is important to note that the colours associated with each Elemental may never appear on stage in any literal fashion. The colours merely represent the core psychological attributes of the principal characters, and their Elemental shadows.
Although supporting in nature, the Elementals are a critical part of this interpretation of 'The Duchess of Malfi'. They will be our shape-shifters, fluidly moving from one state to another as required. Each may have several incarnations as both people and other more abstract 'elements'. They will help us illustrate the settings, mood and even the passing of time. They are unusual in that they observe as well as participate in the story; able to understand and reflect on the details of these events from a more removed perspective, like that of 'spirit guide' or 'souls passenger' for each principal. Their names will never be spoken as the principal characters are not aware of their unusual attributes and recognize them only as the characters they portray within each scene.

NERO'S totem colour:
(BLACK):
Among the positive attributes of black are efficiency and security. Black can also represent oppression and menace or 'heaviness'. I found this description of black from the website colour-affects.co.uk interesting:
Black is all colours, totally absorbed. The psychological implications of that are considerable. It creates protective barriers, as it absorbs all the energy coming towards you, and it enshrouds the personality. Black is essentially an absence of light, since no wavelengths are reflected and it can, therefore be menacing; many people are afraid of the dark. Positively, it communicates absolute clarity, with no fine nuances. It communicates sophistication and uncompromising excellence and it works particularly well with white. Black creates a perception of weight and seriousness.
Not perfect, but quite appropriate. Bosola, being the killer, the scripts malcontent and also the only character that truly evolves makes him a perfect 'Black'. He can comfortably embody both the positive and negative aspects of this powerful colour and we decided long ago he would wear Black.
