Trivia: The low and rich singing voice Deb used while performing in "Brownstone B" and "Company" is a new discovery for her. She has been singing soprano most of her life! Awards: 2005 Brickenden Theatre Awards Nomination for "Retreat From Moscow" as "Alice" 2009 Brickenden Theatre Awards Best Musical Award "Brownstone B" (Cast member) Quote: Acting is about walking in another's shoes and inhabiting a world not your own, where you can explore situations you've never experienced before and meet people the likes of which you may never have met before, and in the end learn something important about your innermost self. Mini Bio: Born in Toronto, Ontario. Deb's earliest theatrical experiences had to do with producing backyard productions in dress-up clothes generously donated by her mother. (A satin and velvet creation was a favourite and was the beginning of a lifelong love of costumes and dressing up.) A love of Shakespeare and speaking verse started in Gr.3; with a friend (Barbara) she delighted in playing the witches in Macbeth. First sang a solo on stage in Gr. 5--the Blue Bells of Scotland, and first appeared in a drama when I played 'Aunt Polly' in a production of 'Tom Sawyer' in Gr. 6. Several successful high school productions led her to study Drama and English at Queen's University. She took part in productions there, both in the drama department and the community, but ultimately decided that her personality did not suit the vagabond lifestyle of a professional actor. Deb completed a two year teacher training program at The Institute of Child Study at U of T (and later a Master of Ed at UWO), and she's taught elementary school Music and Drama since 1979. Deb also enjoy conducting Music and Drama workshops for teachers and, just this past Fall, was a lecturer in J/I Music at UWO's Faculty of Education. Although she has lived much of my early life in Toronto, Ontario, she moved to London in 1979 to take her first teaching job. Her first theatrical experience in London was doing Cabaret at UWO in 1980; "a terrific experience and the place where I met my theatre techie husband, Stephen". (Deb was playing a prostitute, he was the stage manager, and one night, when an actor was absent, Stephen stood in for the "sailor" and the rest is history!) Since then Deborah has enjoyed taking part in two of three productions a year, with several of the theatre companies in town. She had also produced and directed musicals with Cheryll Harrison for six years, and loved doing that. "Productions" have also included two children, now in their twenties, who--"big surprise"--work in and study theatre and music. "There is so much theatre going on in our small city, that there have been some really fine opportunities for me. This production is one". Why we chose Deborah: Although she may be tiring of performing Maids and servants (several recently!), Deb was an early favorite for the role of Cariola. Few could capture the nurturing warmth and also the fiery determination to protect the loved ones of such a character. Deb's presence in any cast has a grounding and calming effect. She's unflappable. She's more than capable, eager to both do her part and help others with theirs and also wants to learn as much as possible through the process as she can. What more could we ask?
