The face of Nero

UPDATE: JANUARY 16, 2011
Further developments and a ton of experimentation have led us to what will very likely (but not guaranteed!) be the final look for our "Elementals".

"Our director definitely wants them to have bold, featureless faces. He would like their bodies to perhaps even blend into the stonework of the set. And he would like them to have masks that do not impair the actors ability to project their lines."

That was from our last update. And it's been serving us well. But for over a month I've been trying to create a mask that is suitable. A non-human, but also very expressive image and I just haven't found it. Until now. Now I believe I have.

I'd been carefully and precisely trying to recreate the human face with cut paper. And it can be done, but I failed at it. My attempts looked more and more like mannequin faces - totally devoid of expression and emotion. The frustration from that fueled me to rip and tear and fold some paper and I discovered a violent (and emotional and expressive!) creative process that inspired some very interesting results...

The actual concept has evolved further too. The Elemental castmembers have THREE forms: The Chorus, The Supporting Cast and The Madmen. As the Chorus, they will wear the white "Tear and fold" masks, As supporting characters they will be unmasked and as the Madman, they will wear the "Dangerous Inmate" masks.
