CONCEPT: Maid / Au Pair for the Estate of The Duchess of Malfi



Servants Uniforms

Our Cariola has been working for the Estate of the Duchy of Malfi for a long time. Perhaps her entire adult life. She raised The Duchess personally and is fiercely loyal to her. This is evidenced by her not hesitating to secretly raise The Duchess' own children to Antonio (a risky personal choice).

Cariola will be most often seen in a very classic European Maid uniform and in one scene her sleeping attire, which will be painfully conservative. We may need to create a third look that she would wear while traveling outside the estate, but we aren't certain of that yet.

The presence of all these servants uniforms are creating an interesting veneer of restraint for our secondary characters Cariola, Antonio and Bosola. I'm enjoying the look of these concepts all together and love the secrets each hold close to their hearts while all the while presenting this very calm and professional exterior.



COSTUME 1:
Servant's Uniform

Target Details:
  • Black , red, or green uniform dress tailored to our actor
  • Apron
  • Headpiece
  • Conservative shoes


UPDATE Oct.4: Our director will not accept classic black as the foundation colour. I'm leaning towards red, much like the photo above.

COSTUME 2:
Sleeping Wear

Target Details:
  • A very conservative ensemble comprised of a night gown, shawl, cap and slippers.




UPDATE Oct. 4: Yes, we will definitely need this costume. And we've also confirmed the need for a 4th costume (below).

COSTUME 3:
Traveling Variation

Target Details:
  • This will be a variation of her uniform with the addition of a hooded traveling cape, or a cape and bonnet combination like the students are wearing in the photo below.


UPDATE Oct.4: The cape is now the final detail of this look for Cariola.

COSTUME 4:
In captivity

Target Details:
  • This will be a variation of her sleeping wear. No slippers or cap. The nightgown will look tattered and dirty. Her hair will also be 'unraveled'.

Red Maid Uniform
Here's a shot of red in action. This is a school uniform for children, but it features similar styling details and it's a good look at how interesting red will be if we use it as a base instead of the classic black. The "nanny-style" overcoat is a great looking item and we'll consider a similar piece for Cariola if we need a traveling outfit for her.

Below are details of the traditional maids uniforms in the traditional black. Interesting, but no energy.
